Alberta Health Services

COVID-19 is believed to be spread mainly by coughing, sneezing or direct contact with someone who is sick with COVID-19 or with surfaces they have recently touched.

Most people – about 80% – recover without needing special treatment. However, it can cause serious illness in some, and there is a risk of death in severe cases.

While we are still learning about COVID-19, serious illness appears to develop more often in people who are older or have pre-existing conditions, such as:

  • high blood pressure
  • heart disease
  • lung disease
  • cancer
  • diabetes

Symptoms for COVID-19 are similar to those for influenza or other respiratory illnesses. The most common symptoms include:

  • fever
  • cough
  • extreme tiredness

Online Testing

To help reduce call volumes to 811, Alberta Health Services has launched an online assessment tool to help people determine whether they should be tested for COVID-19.

Health Link

If you think you have COVID-19 or completed the Online Assessment tool consult Health Link by dialing 811

Please do not visit a hospital, physician’s office, lab or healthcare facility without consulting Health Link at 811

If you need immediate medical attention, call 911 and advise them that you may have COVID-19.
