ACTION SQUAD

The Action Squad is the functional, day to day management team that keeps the Boring Little Girls Club running like a well-oiled machine!

KIRA STEELE (she/her)

FOUNDER & PRESIDENT

Born in Toronto, living in Calgary, Kira Steele’s done a few things in her 27 years. She’s dropped out of university three times, figured out that her alcohol and drug use were taking her down a dark path, fallen in love with Alberta and found out that her voice matters.

Founding the Boring Little Girls Club in November 2018, Kira’s on a mission to bring women, non-binary and trans folks together to create a community that focuses on having fun without alcohol and drugs. Unapologetically loud, and an intersectional feminist, Kira’s ready to shout her story from the tallest building in Calgary in the hope that it will remind others that they are not alone.

Outside of the Boring Little Girls Club, Kira recently graduated with her Bachelor of Commerce from Athabasca University. She lives in Calgary with her husband, their two dogs and cat. Kira is currently on maternity leave, getting ready for the arrival of their first child.

MARIE FERRARO (she/her)

VICE PRESIDENT

My name is Marie Ferraro. I'm 41, queer and sober. I'm originally from the interior of British Columbia but I now call Calgary home.

Getting sober and remaining that way was the hardest thing I've ever done. Years of excessive drinking and drugging had taken its toll and I was dying. I was left with two choices, I could blot out reality to the bitter end or choose another way of life. I'm happy to report I went with option number two.

I became a member of the Boring Little Girls Club because I firmly believe humans thrive when we are surrounded by like minded individuals. I felt there was a lack of visibility in Calgary's sober social scene. Sobriety is a vital act of self love that can leave us feeling isolated and invisible. We all need community.

The BLGC was created to shine a light on those who are looking for pals in the sober sphere.   We are not a recovery group. We are not here to tell you how to live your life. We are just a group of rad sober babes doing rad stuff sober!

BRANDY KOMOR (she/her)

SERGEANT AT ARMS

Brandy  is in charge of ensuring safety during events and to ensure all documentation and communications effectively communicate our mandate and purpose.

Brandy believes we all deserve a safe place we can be honest, share respectfully and be heard. Her professional background in crisis management and addictions counseling make her well suited for this role.

Brandy is from Binghamton, New York and has had the pleasure of living in Regina, Saskatoon, Tokyo, Sydney, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Victoria, and now Calgary, which she calls home.

Brandy began her recovery journey in 2002 and became the first person in her family to break the cycle of addiction. She understands that connection and community are the opposite of addiction and for that reason she passionately joined the BLGC.

MIRANDA MILLIGAN (she/her)

INCLUSION & DIVERSITY LIASON

Hello everyone, my name is Miranda (she/her) and my path to sobriety started in 2013.  Along the way I had some setbacks until I finally I proved to myself there was absolutely no way I could continue to have alcohol in my life and not end up being consumed by it.  I have close to 3 years of sobriety now.  As time accumulates so does my feeling of abundance for the opportunities, adventures, and authentic connections that sober living has afforded me.  I don’t believe there is only one method to getting sober and staying sober.  But I do believe community is essential for a sustainable wellness plan.

Until i found the Boring Little Girls Club I felt isolated in my sobriety.  My choice to opt out of events and gatherings centered around alcohol left little to no options for social interactions. Also, being part of the LGBTQIA+ community I found it most challenging to find, not only, safe sober spaces but also Inclusive and affirming spaces.

The BLGC has provided just such a space for me and now As the Inclusion and Diversity Liaison for The BLGC I want promote and preserve inclusive accessible space here for every Babe seeking sober community regardless of gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ability, appearance, body size, race and religion.

REBECCA ROBERTSON (she/her)

CAPTAIN OF SOBER SUPPORTERS (CSS)

Rebecca is a born and raised Calgarian and she is our head Sober Supporter. She isn’t sober 365 days of the year but she chooses to support her sober babe squad by understanding what those in recovery or living a sober life are going through and by creating and upholding safe spaces for them.

“Growing up in the Calgary rave scene, I am not a stranger to drugs and alcohol. Over the years I have seen the devastating impact that substances can have on people’s lives, especially in the party scene; and I truly believe that anyone can live a full and happy life substance free”.

Rebecca’s role is to engage and empower all boring little girls, and their friends and family to understand how to create safe spaces and how to strengthen relationships between all folks regardless of their relationship with sobriety. “I’m here to open up the dialogue with those who love and support their friends and family in sobriety!”

TASHA SWINGENDANSEN (she/her)

ADMINISTRATION

Tasha (she/her) was born in Calgary, went to university and started her career in Calgary, and is currently raising her young human and fur babies in Calgary with her partner. She is currently learning the ropes of becoming an admin human for the BLGC by managing emails and making sure all of the electronic ducks are in a row. She started her recovery journey in 2014, but has felt a great deal more support and affirmation for her decision to live a sober life after meeting the wonderful folks of BLGC.
